About this opportunity

The American Association for Cancer Research, known as AACR, is taking entries for the 2027 edition of its June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism, an annual award that honours the professional journalists whose reporting helps the public understand cancer, cancer research, cancer advocacy and cancer policy. The prize carries an unrestricted cash award of USD 5,000 together with a commemorative award, and there is no fee to enter.

The award is open to print, broadcast and online journalists around the world whose work reaches a general audience, and entries are judged on professional accomplishment without regard to nationality, geographic location, race, gender, religion or political views. That means a Nigerian or other African journalist covering cancer for a newspaper, magazine, radio programme, podcast, television channel or online platform can be considered on the same terms as anyone else. The prize honours individual journalists, and up to two co-contributors may be named on a winning entry, sharing the cash award.

To qualify, the body of work must have been published or broadcast for the first time between 1 December 2025 and 30 November 2026, and it must be in English or accompanied by an accurate English translation. Entries fall into four categories, namely print and online, audio, video, and multimedia, and each submission may be entered under one category only. Institutions, organisations and trade publications cannot receive the prize, so this is an award for working journalists rather than for newsrooms.

The closing date is Monday, 7 December 2026, and every entry is made through the AACR electronic awards platform, as paper applications are not accepted. Winners are invited to collect the prize at the AACR Annual Meeting 2027 in Orlando from 2 to 7 April 2027. Applicants keep their submissions confidential, and a short impact statement of no more than 200 words sits at the heart of each entry.
