About this opportunity

ARTEFFECT is an annual visual art competition run by the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes, a US based nonprofit that uncovers stories of unsung heroes and shares them with students. The 2027 edition is open to students in grades 6 to 12 from any country, so Nigerian and African students can enter. The competition is free. What students do.

Each entrant creates one original visual artwork that honours an unsung hero, a person whose courage, compassion or conviction changed other people's lives, and pairs it with a written Impact Statement of 500 to 1,000 words. Painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, textiles and digital art are all accepted. Entries are solo only, work must be created by the student alone, no AI generated work is allowed, and entry must be confirmed by a parent, guardian or teacher. What winners receive.

The prize pool runs over $35,000 USD in total. The headline award is a $6,000 Grand Prize open to students in every grade from 6 to 12. High school students (grades 9 to 12) can win awards of $3,000 and $2,000, while middle school students (grades 6 to 8) can win awards of $2,000 and $1,000. Spotlight prizes of $1,000 and awards of $750 are also given. Winning work is shown on ARTEFFECT's site and in exhibitions, giving young artists an international audience for their craft. Why it matters for African students.

The competition rewards research and empathy as much as technique: students must learn an unsung hero's story and explain its impact in their own words. Nigerian and African students can draw on local heroes, community builders and history figures most international judges have never seen, which is exactly the kind of story ARTEFFECT looks for. There is no travel requirement to enter, the
