Applications are open for the Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF) Young Environmentalist Innovation Challenge (YEIC) , a funding opportunity supporting young people and youth-led organisations developing practical solutions to environmental challenges in Kenya. The 2026 edition focuses on scaling innovations for environmental impact , building on solutions that have already demonstrated success at the community level and are ready to expand their reach.
What the Challenge Supports The programme prioritises innovations addressing areas such as: Climate resilience Sustainable agriculture Circular economy Renewable energy Ecosystem restoration Environmental conservation Other locally relevant environmental challenges.
Eligibility
The challenge is targeted at young innovators aged 15–35 and youth-led organisations working on environmental solutions in Kenya. Applicants should have an innovation with demonstrated potential and a clear opportunity to increase its community-level impact.
Funding and Support KCDF has previously provided substantial grant funding through the challenge. In the second edition, 10 community organisations and two individuals received a combined KSh 53 million to advance environmental innovations.
Beyond financial support, KCDF provides capacity strengthening to selected innovators, including guidance around budgeting, monitoring and evaluation, communications, governance, and financial systems. Why This Matters Young people are increasingly developing solutions to environmental challenges affecting their communities.
The YEIC provides a pathway for promising innovations to move from small-scale community initiatives toward solutions with broader and more sustainable impact. KCDF describes its approach as community-led development, combining grant support with capacity building to help local organisations strengthen and sustain their work.
