Applications are now open for the Timbuktoo MineTech Startup Incubation Programme 2026 , a pan-African incubation initiative by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) designed to support startups developing innovative technologies for Africa’s mining sector. Hosted through the timbuktoo MineTech Hub in Zambia, the programme aims to identify and accelerate startups building solutions that make mining safer, cleaner, more transparent, and more sustainable across the continent.

Selected startups will join the timbuktoo Pan-African Incubation Network , gaining access to world-class incubation, mentors, investors, and AI-powered business support.

Eligibility

Applicants must: Be based in Africa or be building solutions for African mining markets Have a working prototype or Minimum Viable Product (MVP) Have a committed founding team Be solving a real challenge within the mining value chain The programme particularly encourages applications from: Women-led startups Youth-led startups Founders from underserved or mining-affected communities.

Focus Areas

The programme welcomes startups developing solutions in areas including: Mine safety and workforce protection Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) formalization and mechanization Mineral traceability and resource governance Environmental monitoring and climate resilience Lithium-ion battery design and value chain development Remote and autonomous mining operations Mine dewatering, ventilation, and geotechnical risk management Market access, trade, and financial inclusion for mining-linked businesses. Why This Matters Africa holds more than 30% of the world’s mineral resources , yet many mining operations continue to face challenges related to safety, transparency, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency.

The Timbuktoo MineTech Hub seeks to empower African innovators to develop homegrown technologies that transform the mining sector while creating jobs and driving sustainable economic growth. The initiative is part of UNDP’s broader timbuktoo platform, which aims to mobilize US$1 billion over the next decade to support 10,000 African startups and scale 1,000 high-growth enterprises .

Application timeline

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis , with new cohorts admitted every three months . The first cohort commenced in July 2026 , and eligible startups are encouraged to apply early.
