About this opportunity
The CMU-Africa Certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Africa is a six course online programme that treats AI as a working tool, not a lecture topic. It pairs two context courses, including AI and Machine Learning in Africa, with four technical ones covering Python for AI, the mathematical foundations of machine learning, machine learning essentials and applied generative AI. Each course holds around 14 or 15 lessons of roughly three hours, about 45 hours per course, so planning five to six hours a week keeps you on pace.
The certificate suits early career learners, students and recent graduates, and mid career technical professionals who want stronger AI skills without going back for a full degree. You will need basic knowledge of linear algebra, probability and statistics, and some computer programming before you start, plus a computer and reliable internet.
The programme is free for qualified applicants. Applications and recommendations open on 15 October 2026 and close on 15 November 2026, so prospective learners should line up their referees early rather than at the last minute.
