About this opportunity
The Jean Monnet Fellowship is a research year with a support structure around it. Fellows spend twelve months, from September to August, at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, based at Villa Schifanoia in Florence, and are expected to take an active part in the Centre's academic life. The research you do during the fellowship should lead to a publication, whether as an EUI Working Paper, in a scientific journal or with a reputable academic publisher.
The award is generous and specific about its limits. The basic grant is EUR 2,850 per month. If you receive another grant or salary, you must disclose it, and the fellowship is then fixed at a lower rate, with a minimum of EUR 2,100 per month depending on that additional income and on supporting documents. A household allowance of up to EUR 310 per month is available where your partner lives with you in Florence and earns less than EUR 2,000 per month, and the combined total of partner income plus allowance is capped at EUR 2,000 per month. Travel is reimbursed for the incoming trip to Florence and the outgoing trip at the end, on first class rail or economy air, with a combined maximum of EUR 1,200. Taxis are not covered, and no grant is paid for the month of August.
Eligibility
turns on one date. Your doctorate must have been awarded more than five years before the start of the fellowship on 1 September 2027, which means before 1 September 2022. If you are within five years of your PhD, this is not the route, and the EUI Max Weber Programme is the one designed for you. Candidates of all nationalities may apply, and fellows must live in the Florence area for the duration.

Who can apply
- You were awarded your doctorate more than five years before the start of the fellowship on 1 September 2027, which means before 1 September 2022
- You are of any nationality
- You are a post-doctoral researcher, a tenure-track academic, or an academic planning a sabbatical at the Centre
- You can live in the area of Florence for the full duration of the fellowship
- You can take an active part in the academic activities of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies
- Your research proposal fits one of the Centre's main research themes, programmes or projects
Who should not apply
- Candidates within five years of their doctorate are not eligible for this scheme and should look at the EUI Max Weber Programme instead
- Fellows cannot be based outside Florence, since residence in the area is a condition of award
- The fellowship cannot be combined with undisclosed additional income, since other grants or salaries must be declared and reduce the rate to a minimum of EUR 2,100 per month
- Taxi expenses are not reimbursed, and amounts above the EUR 1,200 travel cap need authorisation from the Centre Director on a justified special request

- Prepare a research proposal that fits a Robert Schuman Centre theme and is on track to produce a publication
- Complete your CV and upload your attachments, then submit the full application by 23 October 2026 at 14:00 CEST
- If you are away after the beginning of September or leave before the fellowship ends, notify the Centre, since the grant is reduced or terminated accordingly
Selection process
- Jean Monnet Fellows are selected on the basis of a research proposal and their CV
- The Robert Schuman Centre Academic Staff carry out the selection, and the EUI Executive Committee approves the outcome
- Up to 20 fellowships are offered each year for the academic year 2027 to 2028
- The selection decision is final and individual feedback is not provided
- A reserve list may be drawn on if places become available

Questions applicants ask
My PhD was awarded in 2024. Can I apply?
No. For the 2027 to 2028 year your doctorate must have been awarded before 1 September 2022. If you are less than five years past your PhD, the EUI Max Weber Programme is the route designed for you.
Can I bring my family?
A household allowance of up to EUR 310 per month is paid where your partner lives with you in Florence and their income is under EUR 2,000 per month, and the combined income plus allowance is capped at EUR 2,000. The EUI also assists non-EU fellows and their families with visa and residence procedures.
Is the grant paid for all twelve months?
The fellowship runs twelve months from September to August, but no grant is paid for the month of August. If you arrive after the beginning of September or leave before the fellowship ends, the grant is reduced or terminated accordingly.
When should I register so my referees make it in time?
As early as possible. Registration lets your referees submit their letters before the deadline, and references are not accepted after 23 October 2026 at 14:00 CEST.
Do I get feedback if I am not selected?
No. The selection by the Robert Schuman Centre Academic Staff, approved by the EUI Executive Committee, is final, and individual feedback is not provided. A reserve list may be used if places open up.
