About this opportunity

Cancer research thrives on fresh eyes, and the INSPIRE Research Challenge 2026/2027 is built around exactly that idea. Run by World Cancer Research Fund International in partnership with the American Institute for Cancer Research and other global partners, the scheme supports early career investigators who are between two and seven years into their research career after their PhD or equivalent. It is open to researchers worldwide, so a lab in Lagos, Nairobi or Accra competes on the same terms as one in London.

The challenge looks for innovative, bold proposals with the potential to catalyse rapid advances in cancer prevention, treatment and survivorship. Every application must align with at least one of the six priority areas set for this cycle, and proposals may span more than one where the science justifies it. Alignment alone does not replace the usual tests of scientific quality, relevance to the WCRF remit, feasibility and potential impact.

What this cycle funds

Six priority areas frame the 2026/2027 calls: Integrative oncology, which covers interventions used alongside conventional treatment. Lifestyle and weight loss medications, integrating diet and physical activity with these new drugs. Early onset cancers, exploring the biology and risk factors of cancers diagnosed in younger people. Early life exposures, tracing influences from preconception through adolescence. Ingested contaminants, examining what contaminants in food and water do to cancer outcomes. Ultra processed foods, investigating their role in cancer risk.

Who this is for

Applicants must be early career researchers, two to seven years post PhD or equivalent, employed at a university affiliated research institution or medical school. There is no nationality or residence restriction, and researchers based in Africa are welcome. The work itself must relate directly to cancer prevention, treatment or survivorship.

The timeline to keep

The grant call opened on 5 October 2026. The first step is a Letter of Intent, and those close on 13 November 2026 at 5pm UK time. Outcomes of the Letter of Intent stage are communicated in February 2027, and final funding decisions come at the end of September 2027 following board approval.

Where the money goes

WCRF has not published a fixed grant size for this cycle. The budget ceiling and duration rules sit in the INSPIRE guidelines document linked from the official page, so read that before you build your budget. Questions on remit and who qualifies go to the research funding team at inspire@wcrf.org.

How the applications work

You apply through Proposal Central, the grant management platform WCRF uses. Create an account first if you do not have one, log in, find the open WCRF schemes and click the Apply Now button on the INSPIRE grant. One practical note from WCRF: Proposal Central is not optimised for Safari, so use Chrome, Edge or Firefox, and remember that all dates there display in US month first format.

Questions applicants ask

Can a researcher based in Nigeria or another African country apply?

Yes. The call is open to researchers worldwide, and eligibility turns on your career stage and institutional affiliation, not your location.

What happens after I submit the Letter of Intent?

WCRF reviews it and communicates outcomes in February 2027. Successful applicants are invited to submit a full application for final decisions in September 2027.

Is there a page limit or budget ceiling published?

Not on the main page. The INSPIRE guidelines document linked from the WCRF site carries the detailed rules, so download it before drafting.
