About this opportunity

This is a writing competition with a serious point behind it. PenCom, the pension regulator, uses National Pension Week to get Nigerians talking about how they will actually live after they stop working, and the youth essay prize is the part of the week built for students. You pick a side of that conversation that matters to you and put it into words on the set theme, “My Dream for a Great Retirement Experience in Nigeria”. The organisers want ideas about financial independence, retirement planning and pension reform, written the way a young person would genuinely argue for them.

There are two categories and you enter the one that matches where you are right now. Category A is for students currently enrolled in a recognised Nigerian secondary school, and the essay runs to a maximum of 500 words. The first prize in that category is ₦1,000,000 with a laptop, a trophy and a certificate. Category B is for students at a recognised Nigerian tertiary institution and for serving NYSC corps members, with a 1,000 word ceiling, and its top prize is ₦1,500,000 alongside the same laptop, trophy and certificate package. Outstanding essays are shortlisted for nationwide honours and recognition during the gala ceremonies.

You submit through the official National Pension Week entry form, where you choose your category, give your contact details, your school or institution and your NYSC or student identifier, then upload the essay. Accepted formats are typed text, PDF, DOCX or TXT, with a 10 MB ceiling on the upload, and each entrant may send only one essay. If you are under 18 you also give a parent or guardian name and contact, and that consent is verified before your entry goes into final adjudication. The work must be yours: copied material without attribution can disqualify you, quotations and factual references should be acknowledged, and an essay substantially generated or rewritten by a generative AI system may not be submitted as your own. Light research or brainstorming help is allowed if you disclose it.

The judging is weighted, and the weights tell you what the panel is really reading for. In Category A the score is 30 percent originality and creativity, 25 percent understanding of pensions and retirement planning, 20 percent relevance to the topic, 15 percent organisation and clarity, and 10 percent grammar. In Category B it is 25 percent research and understanding, 25 percent critical thinking, 20 percent practical recommendations, 15 percent innovation and originality, and 15 percent structure and writing quality. Entries pass an administrative check first, then identifying details are stripped from the copy the judges see, and at least three judges score each shortlisted entry wherever that is feasible, with scores normalised by the competition secretariat and finalists verified before any prize is awarded. Entries opened on 1 October 2026, the submission window closes on 20 October 2026 and winners are announced on 26 October 2026.
