Nigeria and Thailand are exploring new opportunities for trade, investment and business partnerships across agriculture, technology, renewable energy and other productive sectors. The development followed discussions on Wednesday between Vice President Kashim Shettima and a Thai delegation led by the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, H.
E. Yousef Hassan Khalawi, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Representing President Bola Tinubu at the meeting, Shettima said Nigeria was seeking to reposition its relationship with Thailand and expand cooperation beyond traditional areas such as crude oil and rice. He said Nigeria could benefit from Thailand’s experience in applying intermediate technology to agriculture and related sectors, particularly as the country seeks to improve productivity and strengthen food security.
“I believe that our relationship should go beyond transactions in crude oil, rice production and so on. So, there is a need for us to review our bilateral relationship at a strategic level,” Shettima said.
The Vice President identified agriculture, ICT, renewable energy and solid minerals as sectors with significant potential for Thai investment and partnerships. “Nigeria is a large market.
There are enormous opportunities for partnership and investment in agriculture, ICT, renewable energy, and solid minerals, and we have a young population and workforce,” he said. Shettima urged Thai businesses and investors to take advantage of Nigeria’s large consumer market, youthful population, natural resources and strategic position within Africa.
Khalawi described Nigeria as a strategic partner for Thailand and an influential voice in the Global South. He also highlighted Nigeria’s growing e-commerce sector as an area with potential for stronger cooperation.
The Thai Deputy Prime Minister said Thailand was proposing a Thailand-Africa Initiative to create a broader framework for strengthening relations with key African countries. The proposed initiative is expected to support stronger economic and business ties, people-to-people engagement and cooperation in priority sectors, particularly agriculture.
The discussions come as both countries seek to deepen their economic relationship and create opportunities for businesses, investors and entrepreneurs to access new markets, technology and partnerships. The meeting was attended by senior officials from both countries, including Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb.
Dunoma Umar Ahmed, and Thailand’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Thirapath Mongkolnavin.
