Wellcome Career Development Awards for Mid Career Researchers in Africa and Other Low and Middle Income Countries

Wellcome Career Development Awards back mid-career researchers who are ready to lead a substantial research programme, with annual expenditure usually below GBP 250,000 excluding salary and a duration of usually 8 years. There is no deadline, applications are accepted year round, and from 29 October 2026 location eligibility narrows to the UK plus low and middle income countries in Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia.

You request the resources your research programme needs. The annual expenditure for a Career Development Award is usually below GBP 250,000 excluding the applicant's salary, and applications above that value are subject to additional scrutiny. Funding duration is usually 8 years, may be less for some disciplines and may only be longer if held on a part-time basis.
