About this opportunity
Research that never gets funded is research that never reaches the people who need it. The Tertiary Education Trust Fund runs the National Research Fund to close that gap, and the 2026 cycle carries a pool of up to N10 billion.
The fund supports work under three broad categories: science, engineering, technology and innovation, humanities and social sciences, and cross cutting research. Thirty thematic areas sit inside them, covering agriculture and food security, health and social welfare, power and energy, information technology and telecommunications, space science, education and human capital, governance and law, gender and social inclusion, entrepreneurship and wealth creation, the blue economy and clean energy, among others. TETFund particularly encourages multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary projects that speak to national development needs.
Each project budget must be more than N5 million and must not exceed N70 million. That is the ceiling for a single funded research project under this cycle.
The route in is a concept note, not a full proposal. You register on the National Research Fund platform as a Principal Investigator, submit the concept note, and the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee evaluates it. Who can apply
- The Principal Investigator must be a lecturer or researcher in a Nigerian public university, polytechnic or college of education

- In a university, the Principal Investigator should preferably be of professorial cadre
- In a polytechnic or college of education, the Principal Investigator should preferably be a chief lecturer
- Additional team members may come from private tertiary institutions, research institutes, Centres of Excellence and industry
- Proposals must address one of the published National Research Fund thematic areas
Who should not apply
- Heads of institutions and their deputies are not eligible to apply as Principal Investigator
- Researchers without a public tertiary institution to coordinate the project cannot lead a submission
- Concept notes submitted after October 15, 2026 will not be considered, as TETFund states there will be no extension
Documents to prepare
- Registration details on the NRF platform: full name, date of birth, gender, academic rank, institution type, institution, highest qualification, qualification title, email address and phone number
- A concept note stating the problem, the research objectives, the methodology, the expected outcomes and the team's expertise
- Evidence of the relevance of the research to Nigeria's development priorities
- A project budget within the N5 million to N70 million range
- A full proposal, required only at the invited stage after a successful concept note
How to apply
- Confirm your institution is a public university, polytechnic or college of education and that you can serve as its Principal Investigator
- Create a Principal Investigator account on the official National Research Fund platform at https://nrf.tetfund.gov.ng/
- Read the published National Research Fund guidelines and choose the thematic area that fits your work
- Write and submit your concept note through the platform before October 15, 2026, Nigerian time
- If your concept note is successful, respond to the invitation to develop and submit a full proposal
- Be available to defend the proposal before the screening and monitoring committee with at least one team member
Selection process
- Concept notes are submitted through the National Research Fund online platform
- The National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee evaluates the concept notes
- Principal Investigators with successful concept notes are invited to develop full proposals
- The Principal Investigator and at least one team member may be invited to defend a fundable proposal before the committee
- Successful proposals are presented to the TETFund Board of Trustees for approval

What is the largest grant I can request?

Can a private university lecturer apply?
The Principal Investigator must be based in a public tertiary institution that TETFund supports. Lecturers in private institutions can still take part as members of a research team.
