About this opportunity

These are generic job openings for rostering, posted on 1 October 2026 across three levels of the Human Rights Officer profession within the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Rather than filling one fixed post, the exercise creates pools of qualified candidates who can later apply for human rights vacancies at all United Nations duty stations, including regional and country presences and peacekeeping operations.

The three levels differ mainly in experience. The P3 opening asks for an advanced university degree or equivalent plus at least five years of relevant experience, the P4 asks for seven years and the P5 asks for ten. A first degree combined with two additional qualifying years may be accepted in place of the advanced degree at any level. Relevant fields include human rights, law, political science, international relations, social sciences, economics, public policy, sustainable development and humanitarian affairs.

English and French are the working languages for these openings and proficiency in either is required. Shortlisted candidates may face a written assessment exercise followed by a competency-based interview. The United Nations strongly encourages applicants from member states identified as unrepresented or under-represented in the Secretariat, a list that includes Angola, Cabo Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Libya and Sao Tome and Principe, and applicants from other member states are not excluded. The closing date for all three announcements is 30 October 2026, and the organisation charges no fee at any stage of recruitment.

Questions applicants ask

Does being on the roster guarantee a job?

No. A roster is a pool for anticipated vacancies, and membership does not guarantee selection or appointment.

Are applications free?

Yes. The United Nations states it charges no fee at any stage of recruitment and never asks for bank account information.

Which experience level should I choose?

Match your years of relevant experience to the level: five years for P3, seven for P4 and ten for P5, and check the education requirements for that level.
