About this opportunity
The International PhD Scholar Initiative is WEHI's flagship doctoral recruitment route, built to bring outstanding early career researchers from around the world into the institute's Medical Biology PhD Program. The page prints that our International PhD Scholarships provide a living allowance equivalent to the current Melbourne Research Scholarship rate and a WEHI PhD top-up scholarship totalling $43,100pa.
In addition, the international PhD student will receive a relocation allowance if located outside Victoria (up to $3,000), health insurance coverage, and a university tuition fee offset. The initiative recruits candidates from outside of Australia to come to WEHI to undertake their PhD research, and international PhD scholars are selected on the basis of their academic record, relevant experience, referees' reports and a videoconference interview.
Any nationality resident outside Australia can apply, so a Nigerian or other African candidate who sits outside Australia meets the geography test the programme prints. Applications opened on Monday 7 September 2026 and close on Saturday 31 October 2026 at 11:59pm AEDT.
For candidates drawn to medical biology research, this is a fully supported doorway into the institute's PhD program.
