Wellcome Discovery Awards are the flagship scheme of Wellcome, the charitable foundation funding science to improve life for everyone. The scheme backs established researchers, or teams led by them, who want to pursue bold and creative ideas that could deliver major contributions to a research field, whether by generating significant shifts in understanding or by developing methodologies, frameworks, tools or techniques that benefit health-related research.
There are no deadlines for this scheme, applications can be submitted at any time. The average Discovery Award is £3.5 million, applications above £5 million receive additional scrutiny, and awards can run for up to 8 years, with an average duration of seven years and supported awards ranging from three to eight. Awards may also be held part-time, in which case the duration can be extended.

Application timeline
from 29 October 2026, Wellcome will only accept applications from lead applicants based at eligible administering organisations in the UK and low- or middle-income countries in Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia. Applications submitted on or before 28 October 2026 are assessed under the current, wider location rules, which today also include Ireland and low- and middle-income countries apart from India and mainland China. For African researchers, the scheme stays open under both regimes, so the honest reading is that the door is open and will stay open for Africa-led teams.

Who can apply
- Lead applicants are established researchers with international standing in their field
- Experience of leading innovative and creative research, and a track record of managing and training others
- When leading a team, the ability to drive and lead a substantial collaborative research programme
- A permanent, open-ended or long-term rolling contract (or a guarantee of one) that is not conditional on receiving the award
- If less than three years remain on your contract, a secured next position at an eligible organisation with a letter of support
- Your salary must be paid by your administering organisation for the duration of the award
- Location: currently the UK, the Republic of Ireland and low- or middle-income countries apart from India and mainland China; from 29 October 2026, the UK plus low- and middle-income countries in Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia
- Retired researchers are eligible where the organisation guarantees space and resources and you hold an appointment with it
Who should not apply
- You cannot apply as lead applicant if you are already the lead applicant on two other Discovery Award applications awaiting decisions
- Applications cannot include activities involving the transfer of grant funds into mainland China
- Coapplicants cannot be based in mainland China
- From 29 October 2026, lead applicants outside the UK and eligible low- and middle-income countries in Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia are no longer accepted

- A letter from a senior member of the administering organisation (and any indirectly funded organisation) confirming salary recovery rules where salary costs are requested
- A letter of support for applicants with less than three years remaining on their contract
