About this opportunity

Standards might sound like dry paperwork, but they decide whether a bolt made in Lagos fits a machine assembled in Nairobi, and whether cotton spun in Mali becomes clothing sold across the continent. The African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) has spent fifty years working on exactly that, and its annual Continental Essay Competition puts the conversation in the hands of students.

The 14th edition runs through the 2026/2027 academic year under the theme "Advancing Intra-African Trade through Conformity Assessment and Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs): Unlocking the Full Potential of the Cotton-to-Clothing Value Chain under the AfCFTA". In plain terms, write about how shared testing, certification and recognition of quality standards can help African cotton, textiles and apparel move across borders and build real regional value chains under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Who can enter

You must be enrolled in an accredited tertiary institution in an African Union member state at the time of submission, be 35 years old or younger, and from any discipline. Entries are individual, no group or co-authored essays, and one essay per student.

The essay

Length is 1,000 to 1,200 words, excluding references, cover page and appendices, in English or French. It must be original and unpublished, submitted as a .docx file in size 12 font with 1.5 line spacing, with a separate cover page carrying your name, institution, country and contact details. Keep your name out of the essay body itself because judging is blind. Plagiarised or substantially AI-generated submissions are disqualified, and sources must be referenced in a consistent style such as APA.

How submission works

This is the part students often miss. You do not email ARSO directly. Essays are submitted through the National Coordinator in your country of study, usually housed in your national standards body, along with a copy of your identity card or passport and the filled registration form (ARSO/CACO/EC/Form 1/2026). National panels judge entries and forward their top five national essays to ARSO on or before 23 April 2027. Your own campus
