About this opportunity

IREX is looking for community problem-solvers aged 27 to 39 and flying them to the United States for a fully funded exchange built around a 12-week practicum with a host organisation in their field. Eleven African countries are on the list, Botswana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda and Uganda, and you must be living and working in your own eligible country when you apply.

Everything is paid for. That covers J-1 visa support, round-trip travel from your home city, a monthly allowance for housing, meals and living costs, accident and sickness health coverage, and accessibility accommodations such as accessible rooms and assistive software like JAWS. The schedule runs from orientation in Washington DC on 2 to 5 August 2027, through the practicum from 9 August to 29 October, to the end-of-program workshop on 1 to 4 November 2027. There is also a SCALE-Up Project route to keep the work going afterwards.

Two requirements do the real filtering. You need at least five years of community experience, volunteer or paid, and you need strong English. Semi-finalists without a valid TOEFL score of 520, or 213 computer-based, take an Institutional TOEFL at IREX’s cost stage of the process. You must also not be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and if you previously held a U.S. Government exchange visa with a two-year home residency requirement, you must have fulfilled it.
